North Hambleton Cubs Rise to the Challenge at District Activity Day
On Sunday 22 February, Cubs from across the District came together for a fantastic day of adventure, teamwork and friendship at the District Cub Challenge Day. Young people from Hillside, Bedale, Masham, Stokesley and Romanby took part, enjoying the opportunity to meet others, work together and experience the wider Scouting community.
The event was especially meaningful as it took place on Founder’s Day, celebrated by Scouts across the UK and around the world, this important date marks the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement, and is a time to reflect on the values of kindness, community, adventure and helping others, the Challenge Day was a great way for Cubs to celebrate these values by learning, supporting one another and having fun together.
Cubs rotated around a varied programme of activities designed to challenge both mind and body, problem-solving and teamwork were developed through activities such as code breaking and a memory challenge, while a swing-weaving base encouraged communication, coordination and cooperation.
There was plenty of energy and excitement too, the ever-popular Floor is Lava challenged teams to think creatively and work together to succeed, while a Cub-friendly version of beer pong (using soft balls and suitable equipment) helped develop accuracy, focus and team spirit in a fun and inclusive way.

Outdoor adventure was a key part of the day. Cubs put their navigation skills to the test during an orienteering activity, working together to follow maps and locate checkpoints. Many also enjoyed the chance to try archery, building confidence, control and perseverance under the supervision of trained volunteers, with safety at the heart of the activity.
The wide range of challenges meant there was something for everyone, helping Cubs to try new things, step outside their comfort zones and grow in confidence. Bringing together young people from different Groups also helped strengthen friendships and celebrate the sense of belonging that Scouting offers.
Events like the District Challenge Day bring the programme to life and reflect the learning-by-doing approach at the heart of North Hambleton District Scouts, helping young people gain skills for life while enjoying adventure and making memories.
A huge thank you goes to the volunteers who planned and delivered the event, particularly the team at Hillside Scout Group, as well as all the leaders and helpers who supported throughout the day, their time, enthusiasm and commitment ensured a safe, well-organised and memorable experience for everyone involved and a brilliant way to celebrate Founder’s Day together.
