Our Interrailing Adventure: Tyr Explorers Head to Kandersteg

Date: 4th Sep 2024 Author: Mark Turner

In summer 2024, Tyr Explorer Scouts took on an exciting challenge to plan, fundraise for and travel to Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland entirely by train, this ambitious Interrail journey gave the young people the opportunity to develop independence, resilience and teamwork while exploring several European countries along the way.

The Explorers successfully raised the funds needed through a range of activities, including a family quiz night, wine tasting, bingo, a multi-challenge stall and individual fundraising efforts, we are very grateful for the generous support received from local charities, as well as financial contributions from the Group and District.

Preparation for the trip was led by the Explorers themselves, they practised meal planning on a budget, learned how to use mobile apps to keep track of one another, and worked together to plan travel routes, they also researched activities in each location and considered costs carefully to ensure the trip was affordable and achievable.

The 14-day expedition was divided into three stages: five days travelling and exploring en route to KISC, four days based at KISC, and a further five days exploring on the return journey to Stokesley, due to the Paris Olympics, the route avoided Paris with minor changes to trains and timings made along the way, made possible through the flexibility of Interrail travel.

The main route taken was:

Stokesley – London – Newhaven – Dieppe – Tours – Lyon – Chamonix – Kandersteg – Hechingen – Brussels – Rouen – Dieppe – Newhaven – Brighton – London – Stokesley

During the expedition, the Explorers took part in a wide range of activities, including hiking, tobogganing, gondola rides, mini golf, swimming in mountain lakes, museum and castle visits, Clip ’n Climb, pedal boating and crate stacking, they also spent time exploring towns and cities, meeting Scouts from across the world at KISC and experiencing local cultures and traditional foods.

Reflections from the Explorers

The Explorers identified many highlights and learning points from the trip:

AG said:
“My top tips are to stay organised, be ready for the unexpected and make the most of every place and experience.

LG reflected:
“I learned the importance of preparation and organisation. I improved my money management, practised speaking different languages and helped plan our routes using apps. I feel much more independent.”

LG also shared a highlight:

“Standing in the glass box at the Aiguille du Midi and seeing the turquoise waters of Blausee and Oeschinensee was amazing.”

RR added:

“My wow moment was swimming in Oeschinensee, I’d recommend learning some different languages and getting confident with train stations, finding water dispensers, platforms and trains quickly became an important skill.”

Would we do it again?

Definitely, Kandersteg International Scout Centre offers fantastic opportunities throughout the year, and the Explorers are already talking about returning in the future, perhaps for a winter expedition next time.

This adventure was a brilliant example of youth-led Scouting in action, helping young people develop skills for life while creating lasting memories.
