Bedale Explorer Unit

Based in Bedale, the Explorer Scout Unit is open to all young people aged 14–18, welcoming anyone who is ready to challenge themselves, try new things, and be part of something bigger. Explorer Scouts are about adventure, friendship, and preparing young people for life, whether that’s through outdoor experiences, leadership opportunities, or giving back to the local community.

Our programme runs through weekly meetings, combining both indoor and outdoor activities throughout the year. No two sessions are ever the same. Explorers might find themselves learning practical life skills one week and heading out into the countryside the next. Activities are designed to be engaging, challenging, and fun, while helping young people grow in confidence and independence.

Recent activities have included hiking and expedition skills, working towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and supporting local community events such as the Hunton Steam Gathering. These opportunities allow Explorers to develop teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills, while also making a positive impact in their local area.

The Unit meets at the Scout and Guide Headquarters, Emgate, Bedale, providing a safe and welcoming base for activities and planning future adventures.

Across the UK, week by week, thousands of ordinary volunteers give their time at Explorer Scout meetings — and together they help young people do extraordinary things. Through Explorers, young people are supported to learn new skills, make lasting friendships, and build the confidence to stand on their own two feet. The programme encourages independence while offering the guidance and support needed to try new challenges in a safe environment.

Explorer Scouts can also work towards a wide range of activity badges and awards, recognising their achievements and commitment. From outdoor and adventurous skills to leadership, volunteering, and personal development, these awards help young people gain valuable experience and qualifications that are respected by colleges, universities, and employers alike.
