About North Hambleton District Scouts

The Scouts is the UK’s biggest mixed youth organisation. North Hambleton is one of the largest Scout Districts in North Yorkshire, supporting over 500 young people aged 4 to 18, backed by a dedicated community of adult volunteers.

Our Trustee Board is the legal governing body of the District and a registered charity (number 1120424). It exists to ensure that Scouting in North Hambleton is delivered safely, responsibly, and in line with our charitable objectives. Every young person who benefits from Scouting in our district does so because people like you are willing to give their time to keep things running well.

About the Role

Trustees are collectively responsible for the governance and strategic direction of the District. You will work alongside the Chair, Treasurer, and fellow trustees to make informed decisions, provide oversight, and ensure the board fulfils its legal and charitable duties.

This is not a hands-on delivery role. You will not be running sessions or organising events. Your contribution is at board level: bringing your perspective, asking good questions, and helping the board make sound decisions in the best interests of the District and the young people it serves.

Your Key Responsibilities</Strong >

• Attend and contribute to Trustee Board meetings, engaging constructively with agenda items and decisions

• Act in the best interests of the charity at all times, putting the needs of the District and its young people first

• Help ensure the District operates within its charitable objectives, legal requirements, and Scouts Policy, Organisation and Rules

• Support the financial oversight of the District, including reviewing budgets and annual accounts

• Contribute to strategic planning, helping to shape the future direction of Scouting in North Hambleton

• Champion safeguarding and make sure the welfare of young people remains central to all decisions

• Bring your own skills, knowledge, and professional experience to enrich board discussions

• Support the Chair and fellow trustees between meetings where needed

Meetings and Time Commitment

The Trustee Board meets 4 times per year for quarterly meetings, plus the Annual General Meeting. Meetings are held online or in person and are typically scheduled in the evening to fit around working hours.

Outside of meetings, you can expect to give around 1 to 2 hours per month to reading papers, responding to correspondence, and occasional ad hoc support. This role works well alongside full-time employment or other commitments.

What We Are Looking For

We are keen to build a board that reflects a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. You do not need experience of Scouting or of charity governance to apply, though both are welcome. We are particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in any of the following areas, though this list is not exhaustive:

• Finance, accounting, or business management

• Law or compliance

• Human resources or people management

• Marketing, communications, or fundraising

• Education, youth work, or community development

• Health and safety or safeguarding

• Property, estates, or facilities management

Above all, we are looking for people who are:

• Committed to acting in the best interests of the charity

• Willing to prepare for meetings and engage thoughtfully with agenda items

• Collaborative, open-minded, and reliable

• Ready to ask questions and contribute their perspective with confidence

UK law states that trustees must be aged 18 or over, must not appear on the Individual Insolvency Register or the Register of Disqualified Directors, and must not have been previously removed as a charity trustee.

What Is In It for You

• Genuine board-level experience and charity governance knowledge, valuable at any stage of your career

• The chance to make a real and lasting difference to hundreds of young people in your community

• A welcoming, supportive team of fellow volunteers with a wide range of backgrounds

• Full induction, training and ongoing support from North Yorkshire Scouts

• Reasonable expenses reimbursed so that cost is never a barrier
